High School Admissions in Ostrava: A Guide for Expat Families

Moving to a new country brings a lot of excitement, but also new challenges. For expat families, one of the biggest questions is often about education, how do you get your child into a local high school?

If your child is getting ready for high school in the Czech Republic, understanding the local admission process is key. We’ve put together a clear guide based on the latest information from Do školy společně to help you through the 2026 high school admissions.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to High School Entry in Ostrava

The path to high school (Střední škola) in the Czech Republic is structured, and knowing the key dates will make a big difference. Let’s make sure you’re prepared!

1. Preparation: January 2026

Before application season begins, gather all the necessary documents. Each school might have specific requirements, but generally, you’ll need:

  • School report cards.

  • Medical certificates from a doctor.

  • Portfolios (especially important for creative or art-focused programs).

2. Submitting Applications: February 1–20, 2026

This is your official window to apply! You can submit applications for:

  • Up to 3 study programs in the standard admission round.

  • 2 additional applications if your child is applying to programs that require a “talent” entrance exam (these are typically for arts or sports schools).

    3. Entrance Exams: March & April 2026

Depending on the chosen program, students will take different tests:

    • Talent and School Exams: These often happen between mid-March and late April.

    • Interviews: Some schools include personal interviews as part of their assessment.

    • Standardized Exams: For programs that lead to the Maturita exam (the Czech leaving certificate), national standardized tests are scheduled for April 10 and April 13, 2026.

4. Results and Next Steps: May – August 2026

The wait is over! Here’s what to expect:

  • First Round Results: These are usually announced on May 15, 2026.

  • Second Round: If your child isn’t admitted in the first round, don’t worry! A second round of admissions takes place between May 19 and May 24, 2026.

  • Additional Rounds: If needed, further rounds might continue through July and August to fill any remaining places.

5. The Big Day: September 1, 2026

After all the preparation and waiting, your child will officially start their new journey on their first day of high school!

Expats Tip: High school programs in the Czech Republic vary, from vocational training to academic paths that prepare students for university. We highly recommend visiting school “Open Days” (Dny otevřených dveří) during the autumn and winter months. These events are a great way to explore different schools, meet staff, and find the perfect fit for your child’s interests and future goals.

Extra Tip: Keep in mind that the enrollment process is happening earlier this year. Make sure to get ready on time so you don’t miss these important deadlines!
